Software Sales Positions
The decision to buy a software package may be something that comes out of a joint effort or it may be made by one person that's in charge. Small businesses, for example, may use an "out of the box" database management system. This is a decision that usually comes from the head of the company. Larger companies, on the other hand, may need to purchase a package that has been modified specifically for them. In this case, more than one person is usually involved in the decision-making process.
Even if one person is responsible for the purchase, many decision makers will want a second opinion or "buy-off" from someone else within the company. Some companies may even have a board of directors that likes to OK every business expense. For the software salesperson, this means that they may have more than one decision-maker to convince.
Finding Your Comfort Level If you're looking to start or further a career in software sales, you may want to consider how comfortable you are selling to multiple decision-makers. If you have no problems presenting to senior level businesspeople, enterprise sales automation and accounting packages may be your best fit. If, however, you'd rather stick with the telephone, desktop software packages may be a better product to sell.
Luckily for people in software sales positions, there is always room to move up. Whether you are just starting out or are looking to move into management, companies are always looking for quality salespeople.
